Frequently asked questions
How do I add books?
Tap + Book in your library and choose an ebook, an audiobook, or both together from the Files app, including iCloud Drive. Press and hold a book in your library to change its files, details, or cover.
Which file types work?
Ebooks: EPUB, PDF, unencrypted MOBI, TXT, Markdown, HTML, RTF and FictionBook. Audiobooks: M4B, or MP3 files in a folder or ZIP.
Why won't a book I bought open?
Back to the Story works with DRM-free files. Books and audiobooks from stores that lock files to their own apps can't be opened by other apps.
How does switching between reading and listening work?
When a book has both an ebook and an audiobook, Back to the Story scans them in the background to match recording time to text. After that, your place carries over whenever you switch. The first scan of a long book can take a little while.
Can it read a book aloud without an audiobook?
Yes. On-device Text to Speech reads any ebook aloud and keeps your place, so you can switch back to reading at any time. The voices are downloaded once and then work entirely on your iPhone, even offline. There are three voice models, from most expressive to fastest, and you can create your own voice from a short recording; the recording never leaves your iPhone.
What does Back to the Story Pro include?
Reading is always free. Audiobook playback and Text to Speech include a 30-day free trial. After that, Back to the Story Pro unlocks them permanently with a single one-time purchase. There is no subscription.
How do I get Pro back on a new iPhone?
Open the Pro screen and tap Restore Purchases while signed in with the same Apple Account you used to buy it.
Can I get a refund?
Purchases are handled by Apple. You can request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Where are my ratings and notes?
Tap Reviews in your library. It keeps every book you've rated or read, even after you delete the book's files, and you can export it from the library menu.
